長城修筑的歷史悠久，工程雄偉浩大，是世界少有的奇跡。長城東西南北交錯，綿延伏于我們偉大祖國遼闊的土地上。它好像一條巨龍，翻越巍巍群山，穿過茫茫草原，跨過浩瀚的沙漠，奔向蒼茫的大海。根據歷史文獻記載，有20多個諸侯國家和封建王朝修筑過長城，若把各個時代修筑的長城加起來，大約有10萬里以上。其中秦、漢、明3個朝代所修長城的長度都超過了1萬里。現在我國新疆、 甘肅、 寧夏、 陜西、 內蒙古、 山西、河北、北京、 天津、 遼寧、 吉林、 黑龍江、 河南、山東、湖北、湖南等省、市、自治區都有古長城、峰火臺的遺跡。其中僅內蒙古自治區的長城就達3萬多里。
明朝在“外邊”長城之外，還修筑了“內邊”長城和“內三關”長城。“內關”長城以北齊所筑為基礎，起自內蒙古與山西交界處的`偏關以西，東行經雁門關、平型諸關入河北，然后折向東北，經來源、房山、昌平諸縣，直達居庸關，然后又由北而東，至懷柔的四海關、與“外邊”長城相接，以紫荊關為中心，大致成南北走向。“內三關”長城在很多地方和“內邊”長城并行，有些地方兩城相隔僅數十里。除此以外，還修筑了大量的“重城”。雁門關一帶的“重城”就有24道之多！
長城是我國古代勞動人民創造的奇跡。自秦始皇開始，修筑長城一直是一項大工程。據記載，秦始皇使用了近百萬勞動力修筑長城，占全國人口的1/20！當時沒有任何機械，除運土、運磚可以用毛驢、山羊能爬山的牲畜外，全部勞動都得靠人力，而工作環境又是崇山峻嶺、峭壁深壑。可以想見，沒有大量的人群進行艱苦的勞動，是無法完成這項巨大工程的。
萬里長城的工程量，據粗略估計，僅以明朝修筑為例，若將其磚石、土方用修筑一道厚1米、高5米的大墻，可環繞地球一周有余。如果用來鋪筑一條寬5米、厚35厘米的馬路，那就能繞地球三四周了。如果把所有朝代所修的總計10萬里來計算，則這道長墻可繞地球十幾周，這條馬路，可繞地球三四十周。
